Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the gender disparity in utilization of dental implants among a geriatric population.

Materials and Methods: The presence and type (fixed partial denture, removable partial or complete denture, implant supported overdenture, and dental implants) of prosthodontic treatment, age, gender, and the number of remaining teeth were collected from the dental records of patients older than 80 years visiting the five dental clinics including one dental college hospital, two dental hospitals, and two private dental clinics from January 1, 2008 to the November 30, 2010 in South Korea. Statistical analyses of data were performed using Wilcoxon signed rank test, Welch test, and Fisher¡¯s exact test.

Results: Difference of utilization of dental implants between the men and women was strongly statistically significant (Pvalue = 0.011); almost two folds of men (68.2%) had dental implant than women (31.8%). However, differences of utilization of fixed partial denture, removable denture, and implant supported overdenture between men and women were
not statistically significant.

Conclusion: Among a geriatric population of more than 80 years old in South Korea, gender disparity in utilization of dental implants was found; men tended to be provided with dental implants almost twice as frequently as women.
